Tennessee Walking Horse Investigation Exposes Cruelty
I was surprised this issue was not on this forum yet...
An HSUS undercover investigation into the walking horse industry finds rampant cruelty. It was covered by ABC Nightline and CNN amongst others.
Warning: Contains Graphic Footage

What started as a "just a one man action " has turned into a more general issue for the Walking Horse Industry.
By now, a week later, Keith Dane, the director of equine services for the nation’s Humane Society, and interviewed in the video, said he has been told by a top official of the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration there has been a formal complaint filed against him and that he should be present for a “hearing” next month to answer charges that demand he be expelled from the board of the group’s Breeders and Exhibitors Association. The hearing to “shoot the messenger” is scheduled June 28 in Lewisburg, Tn.

Also Monty Roberts, who was going to have a clinic in June with TWH responded on his facebook page:
"Recently I was asked to come to Tennessee to further work with people who are desirous of change within that industry. Subsequent to the Night Line television report, I will not go unless I am accompanied by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Night Line organization themselves. "
This was a reaction of his Join Up in 2006 with a padded TWH:

this is in discussion on the facebook group of this forum - just to let you know that we do register things.
this stuff is really hard to bear, the good thing about this publicity is that this includes the hope to change things.

Hi Rivera,
This topic was indeed discussed numerous times on this forum.
Most of it based on a forum member finding a video of a Big Lick horse on Youtube.
Difference to this is that it is headline news in the US. Not only within the TWH scene, but on national television (ABC and CNN). Last time this has happened was in 2005-2006 if I recall correct.
By coverage on national television is has reached far more people then just the TWH scene. Public opinion is against any form of Big Lick, action devices, heavy shoes and protests becomes louder and louder.
Also the position of the TWH Registry TWHBEA, and their comments on this, has resulted in the fact various breeders (including a European breeder) decided NOT to register horses with TWHBEA any longer. That is a huge change to me!
TWHBEA is the same organisation organizing some shows in Europe / Germany.
So it will affect TWH owners, breeders and riders in Europe as well.

2006 was the year the Big Lick WGC class was cancelled since 7 out of 10 horses were sored and didn't pas inspection.

these news being headline - gosh how many years nobody looked into it - that is really good news, oscar.
i have to admit that i could hardly see the videos on which the verdict is based.
but if this is helpful to give the abuse of the horses some negative publicity, I can just be thankful that people have been this courageous.
pepsi as a big sponsor has cancelled its participation - that is the right direction! these tortures will only stop when they cant earn any more money with their abuse.
i really hope that the visitors of the big lick shows start to think - and stop applauding for grotesque movements. maybe get to appreciate the real beautiful natural movement of a walking horse.

Rivera, i totally agree with you - in this Case wie speak one language. The former Tennessee walking horse breed is so wonderful, wie don't Need to manipulate. Wie should just keep the breed for what it was bred for - a smooth riding horse that can affordless manage long distances - for both: Rider and horse. We should just Save this and honestly breed with Sound horses with Sound Bones, Sound confirmation, Sound Hair and mind....
So Men don't need to manipulate .... They know how to Walk!!!
Sorry for my bad englisch ( that's Not my Language - but meaning

NEIN!

Whistleblower Who Alleged Horse 'Torture' Threatened With Expulsion from Breeders Group
We (TWH lovers in Europe) have to deal with that bad image a lot. That's why I think this is not only an
US Big Lick issue. It affects the promotion of our beloved breed in a negative way, and will in the future if nothing changes.
Did any one read this?

What I really do not understand is why someone (Kathy Zeis) with a history of violations (and also former judge for European - Dutch TWHBEA shows) files a complaint with the person who has the guts to bring it to the public....
Did you also do your research on the number of violations and suspensions of judges TWHBEA sent in the last years for the European and German TWHBEA championships?
